Most Anticipated Releases of January 2017

Hello, good people of the internet, and Happy New Year!

I thought that we could look forward into the future together and talk about some of the awesome books that are being released in 2017!

Set in 1959, The Warden’s Daughter tells the tale of Cammie O’Reilly, nicknamed Cannonball, who lives above the entrance to the Hancock County Prison with her father, the warden of the jail. Her mother passed away when she was a baby trying to save her, and now at the age of 13, she’s trying to break free from her grief and past. She spends a great deal of time with incarcerated women, looking for a mother figure, and her depression comes to a head when her best friend Reggie becomes enamored with a child murderer who has recently entered the prison.

Roxane Gay’s newest book Difficult Women is comprised of stories detailing the intricate and powerful beauty that is love, life, and human connection. Each story features women from varying walks of life, from the reality of a sex worker to a black engineer trying to overcome the obstacles of gender and race in her fiend, to to the secret lives of a wealthy subdivision in Florida.

A List of Cages by Robin Roe

Adam Blake lands the best senior elective at his high school, serving as an aide to the school psychologist. But when the psychologist asks him to track down a dark and twisty freshman who has been avoiding her, he realizes that the boy is actually his former foster brother, Julian. While Adam is excited to be reunited, the five years since they last saw each other proved to be dark and mysterious for Julian. The summary ends on the illusive note, “Adam is determined to help him, but his involvement could cost both boys their lives.”

The Most Dangerous Place on Earth by Lindsey Lee Johnson

This book follows Molly Nicoll, a teacher in a wealthy suburbia of California. She grows intrigued with the lives of her privileged students behind closed doors. What she doesn’t know is that a tragedy that occurred when the students were all in middle school had a deep impact on each of them, as different as they all are, from jock to slacker to popular mean girls. They must deal with this tragedy and continue to hold up a facade of perfection while also growing up in the age of technology, where every action can be recorded and shared with the rest of the world, never to be erased.

Arielle’s mother abandoned her when she was a young child, and since then she has traveled across the country with her father— her life has been comprised of various schools, apartments, friends, and neighbors. But she just wants to stay in one place and make real friends. But Arielle learns that her mother never truly left— Arielle was actually kidnapped by her father, and her mother has been looking for her ever since. Her mother wants Arielle back, but despite what her father has done, she loves him and has no connection with her mother.

That’s it for now! Let me know which books you’re excited for in January 2017.
